Since forming in 2012, we have grown from a team of 3 to a team of over 30 consultants that work with us, based in their home countries across the globe. We are particularly proud of the multitude of projects we engage in with our long-term partners and clients- in impact investing, sustainable energy, sustainable agriculture, financial inclusion, gender lens investing, inclusive entrepreneurship and other areas; by way of offering training, advisory, research, evaluation and technical assistance. We devise public-facing tools and products that help investors improve their focus on gender; that help businesses go from intention to action on gender and social inclusion, while taking geographical context into account. What does a Marketing and Communications Lead do at Value for Women?
The Marketing and Communications Lead (Global) designs, develops and delivers effective brand messaging and communications for Value for Women in a global market. This unique role is focused on positioning VFW’s voice, brand and work to existing and potential clients and partners, and on driving marketing and communications activities in a way that communicates our unique impact and value proposition.
This exciting role is part of the global, multi-disciplinary team of experts uniquely positioned to drive the adoption of gender and social inclusion strategies by investors, businesses, financial institutions and intermediaries across the globe. We are a 30+ person, international, dynamic and fast-growing organisation that is highly collaborative and works 100% remotely from home.
Where does this role fit into the organisation?
The Marketing and Communications Lead will report to our Director of Strategy and Development. Others reporting to this consultant will be the Creative Services Team members, external communications consultants and vendors, as required.
How much does this role pay?
VFW hires self-employed individuals exclusively, and remuneration is based on a daily rate, to be determined based on factors such as 1) Previous experience 2) Location and global market rates. VFW strives to pay competitive rates that account for the cost of living, which differs across countries and regions.
More about the Marketing and Communications Lead responsibilities
The successful candidate will strengthen VFW’s position as a global leader on gender in the context of investment, business and finance with a broad and diverse audience. They will enable simple and effective communication about VFW’s value proposition and impact focus on the public and the media via promotional materials and diverse outlets.
- Support the Director of Strategy and Development to develop and deliver a strategy for thought leadership to strengthen the organisation’s position and voice.
- Serve as primary lead for thought leadership opportunities, starting from the drafting, review, and/or submission of abstracts, to speaker training, to appropriate promotion and communication plan during and after the opportunity has occurred.
- Develop and deliver on organisation-wide communication, marketing and visibility strategy and action plan that is lean, action focused and in line with Value for Women’s Strategy and brand identity. Specific activities could include:
Execute and manage communications, marketing, media, and PR assets and activities, including overseeing the maintenance and update of the website, brochure, social media channels, newsletters, campaigns, and new media products.
Develop key messages and narratives on topics and issues relevant to VFW for sharing and dissemination in mainstream/ niche media.
Manage strategic proactive media outreach by identifying VFW brand awareness opportunities; take initiative to act upon these opportunities to achieve results. Manages relationships with media to create future opportunities.
Manage projects and campaigns including directly coordinating with vendors, external consultants and other members of the business support and creative team. Work with external suppliers and vendors on content, graphic design, website and report and multimedia production.
Oversees digital and social media strategy, including the evolving digital market and contributes new ideas to enhance the organisation’s social presence. Analyse, synthesise and course correct based on data and metrics provided.
- Support Team capacity building & leadership
Guide and develop appropriate support, training, and resources to the VFW team, as and when required. Train team, interns and periodically project partners to represent VFW in thought leadership forums and events.
Ensure organizational compliance with all relevant regulations, guidelines, policies (e.g. GDPR) and best practices.
What are the requirements for this role?
The ideal candidate is based in Asia or Africa, with 10+ years of relevant experience. They hold a master’s degree in journalism, marketing, and public relations (or related field). Exceptional candidates with Bachelors/University degree may also apply.
The Lead is expected to roll up their sleeves and execute tasks and responsibilities, as needed. They are expert problem-solver, and adaptable to changing realities. They are solid communicator, innovative thinker and can communicate effectively with diverse stakeholders. Our team works best with people who interact positively, and who are results-based, entrepreneurial and client-centered.
We look for the following knowledge, skills, attitude, and experience:
Knowledge and Skills
Full proficiency in English, both verbal and written communication skills. Additional knowledge and proficiency in Spanish would be a plus.
A strong understanding of the different communications channels and the role of segmentation in communications.
Proficiency in Canva, Mailchimp, Adobe Creative Suite, and other email marketing and campaign tools
Strong understanding of social media, digital marketing and design tools, CMS and database systems. Preferably, hands-on experience with web content management tools such as WordPress, CraftCMS, or similar such.
Use of project management, Google Suite and office tools.
Knowledge of SEO and Google Analytics.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and strategic listening skills.
Good presentation skills.
Strong time management skills and ability to juggle a variety of projects with shifting priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
Comfort with communicating internally and managing projects with Asana, Slack, and Google Suite.
Motivated about working towards an equitable society and the role of communications and entrepreneurship in achieving that.
Articulate storyteller and are able to both speak and write with passion, clarity, and purpose
Strategic thinker with proven ability to craft and execute impactful communication campaigns, pitches, and content products.

Ability to stay independently organised and motivated working as part of a remote international team

Proven work experience of 10+ years as a Marketing and Communications Lead or a similar role.
Experience in developing and upholding organisation-wide communications policies and procedures.
Experience in people management and ability to deliver operational requirements of a given function.
Some experience having worked in the development/ social enterprise sector is desirable but not essential.
Experience working through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and sense of belonging, particularly with people from a variety of backgrounds and experiences.
Gender knowledge and skills, practical experience in gender and economic development; or gender coursework, are desirable but not essential.
At the end of one year, the Marketing & Communications Lead will have:
Developed the ownership of, refined and driven an integrated marketing and communications strategy that guides our activities for the coming year, while having established evidence of early success through the implementation of a phased tactical plan.
Developed an insight and data-driven engagement plan for partnership prospecting that sources leads (for the Development team to qualify), and established a methodology to measure, track, and course-correct.
Built and managed the ideation and execution of campaigns that support fundraising goals and an expanded follower base.
Directly create and oversee the creation of thought leadership pieces written by or on behalf of the CEO, team members, and others in our partner network, ensuring placement in relevant forums (e.g. social media, conferences, speaking engagements, and panel discussions)
Led the creation of a suite of marketing collateral that supports programs, partnerships, and thought leadership.
